Manchester United were 2-0 down at half-time against Roma and won 3-2. Matias Soule and a Donyell Malen penalty had the visitors in control at the break. Bruno Fernandes then scored a retaken penalty, Bryan Mbeumo hit both posts, and Matheus Cunha scored twice in four minutes late on. Cunha was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card. UEFA called it the end of a nine-match run without a win. For a side that is 17th in the Premier League, the night was a result and a red card, not a change of league position.

Aston Villa's night was cleaner and worse. Barcelona won 3-0 at the Camp Nou. Lamine Yamal scored after seven minutes and became the highest-scoring teenager in Champions League history. Raphinha added two in the second half. The defeat ended Villa's club record of four straight wins in the competition and a perfect start to this league phase. They had been the English side Europe was talking about. On Tuesday they were level with Barcelona on nine points, and behind on the night.

The other Tuesday scores

Paris Saint-Germain beat Villarreal 6-0 and were 4-0 up after 17 minutes, the fastest four-goal start in the competition's history on UEFA's account. Bayern Munich won 2-0 at Atletico Madrid. Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer scored, the second after a pass from Harry Kane, on Manuel Neuer's 164th Champions League appearance. Inter beat Feyenoord 3-0. Galatasaray and Stuttgart drew 2-2. Bodo/Glimt and Lille drew 0-0. Sporting and Shakhtar drew 0-0. LASK beat Slovan Bratislava 4-0.

There is no Premier League football until Friday. Europe is the week.

Tonight: Prague, Istanbul, Leipzig

Arsenal, who lead the Premier League on 24 points after Kai Havertz's winner at Anfield, play Slavia Prague at 8pm. Slavia have one point from three games. Liverpool, fifth in the league on 15 points after that Anfield defeat, are at Fenerbahce at 5.45pm. Fenerbahce have two points from three, both of them draws. Manchester City, second in the league on 21 after losing at home to Brighton, are at RB Leipzig at 8pm.

Michael Carrick's United play Aston Villa at Old Trafford in the league on Sunday at 4.30pm, with Cunha now facing a ban and Villa arriving from a first European defeat. The league table does not move today. Everton's win at Newcastle closed matchweek nine. The next league match is Friday at 8pm, Everton at home to Coventry. Until then the photograph is the one Monday left: Arsenal clear, Brighton third, United in the bottom four, and a European night that flattered only one of the two English clubs who played.
